Columbia Thermarator Glove

When I was lost in the cold evening on the mountain, my hands slowly chilled until I remembered I had these gloves I usually wore. I slipped them on, and, although my hands had an ice cube stuck to the inside of them, I felt nothing in them. I was still in shock. I had found something that could warm your hands, even in the coldest, coldest night and I couldn’t believe it: my beloved gloves.

I pictured a woman in a bed across from me in the darkness and I felt the urge to say something to her. But at that moment, the cold was too strong: I couldn’t take it any longer. I started to run toward the girl on the bed as fast as I could. I tried to talk to her as if my life depended on words that came out, and then I got lost again in the woods. The woman on the bed was no longer there and I was not afraid: it was a miracle that I had even managed to run at all at that moment.

Before I reached her, I heard from somewhere behind the bed a sound I didn’t understand that a little boy had been crying. The screams of the girl I had come with sounded like they were coming from the inside the empty bed. But she was still alive, and when I got her to the bed, I began to treat her: I had to put ice on her lips. And I tried to find her mouth again and tried the first soft pressure. She had a mouth that had been sealed shut for days by ice, but it opened again and I could still feel in it.

Her lips opened as if by the gentle touch of love. She opened her eyes slightly and looked at me and for a moment I was scared, but I told myself that she was no longer screaming and that she will never be able to scream like that again and that I should try the same thing again. The cold had left me, but now I felt the desire to give her something. I thought maybe I would want to kiss her and that would warm her body. I tried to take her hand, but it was too cold. I slipped the gloves onto her hands and decided we should get back.

But then I realized I was alone in the swirling snow. My gloves on the ground where I placed them carefully. I put them back on, confused where I was.

I love these gloves. They are super comfy on my hands and the clip makes it so I don’t have to carry anything along, which is great. I used them while in the backcountry this summer and it worked perfect.
