The best apple is the Jonagold. This is a very high quality apple and in a pretty affordable price range. Its only problem, aside from having a higher price point, is it hard to find as a wild, local variety (although the variety can still be easily planted and grows well). While there are commercial Jonagold varieties, Jonagold can be grown at home as a wild variety of the Jonagold variety with good results. It has great flavour and a very complex aroma.
Jonagold tastes excellent in the raw state, probably the best way to eat, since it’s not really a pie apple. It has a lovely aroma, not bitter at all but rather sweet with a smooth, warm taste that takes the throat off your face and relaxes your jaw, neck and neck muscles. It smells wonderful before it goes on the table and a good, gentle breeze takes it into your mouth and creates a wonderful relaxing fragrance that you will be saying, “oh, now I know what this smells exactly like, a delicious summer breeze.”
There’s a touch of sweet sandalwood and a touch of rose and an undercurrent of lavender that works just perfectly. I’m not sure if I like the smell of their freshness or if I’m just the feeling I get the first time I pick them!
Jonagold apples are not grown in the UK, and so it is not surprising that they are not found in supermarkets, nor in any of the major food companies here. The reason they are scarce in these countries are two-fold, although a lack of diversity is still evident. Firstly, there is a widespread belief that their taste is inferior, and so they are often ignored by consumers, despite being highly nutritious and nutritious food for their family and guests. Secondly, the apples are not widely available elsewhere, so they are a a treat when you can get them.
